Black History Month: Progress in the Milwaukee Police Department

Milwaukee police captains make black history

Our Mission Statement

League of Martin will be a voice that shapes positive change in our community. LOM will educate members of the community on law enforcement topics, recruit, assist and develop them to become law enforcement professionals.

“It’s not an us vs. them:” Discussion in Milwaukee focuses on bridging the gap between police, community

It was an important discussion about bringing police and the community together. Members of both groups met at City Hall to brainstorm solutions to the divisions that have plagued the city.

"It`s largely in response to the fact that we are in crisis in this city," Marynell Regan, a member of Milwaukee's Fire and Police Commission said.

It's a crisis multiple groups are working to tackle.

On Monday evening, members of the FPC, the NAACP and the League of Martin talked about improving police/community relations.

"It`s hard to talk about race. It`s hard to talk about police misconduct," Tracey Dent with the Peace for Change Alliance said.

The group addressed tough topics -- everything from how police patrol, to the difficulties of working at the Milwaukee Police Department during a time of unrest.

"Everybody should have the right to be treated equally. That`s all we saying. We need to change the mentality from a warrior to a guardian," Fred Royal, president of the Milwaukee branch of the NAACP said.

"It`s a little bit challenging to be out there because any time an officer does something, whether it`s here or in another state, it is something that we all pay for," Regina Howard said.

The group ultimately decided Monday evening the community and police need one another.

"It`s not an us vs. them," Royal said.

"To hear what people are thinking and talking about -- I think that`s the way you really build strong community relationships is you have sessions where people can just talk," Regan said.

These meetings are part of a continuous effort to bridge the gap between the community and police.

Leaders who took part in the discussion said they're also working to increase diversity on the police force, and they plan to hold a recruitment in 2017.

Our History

The League of Martin (LOM) is an organization of African American Police Officers. LOM became a chartered organization in 1974 and took its name from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The mission of LOM is to empower African American members of law enforcement based on the philosophy of Dr. King.

Members of LOM adhere to the principle that honesty and integrity are life-long values. The reverence to high-integrity values of LOM members act as a barrier against monetary temptations to compromise their oath to protect and serve the community.

LOM will not stand silent as non-minorities orchestrate and implement programs of social change in the minority community that encourage dependence over self-reliance. LOM and its members will address quality of life issues that impact the community.

LOM will be a voice that shapes positive change in our community. We recognize that only through the empowering of African American officers will that voice be the vehicle that mobilize long overdue changes in “policing the minority communities.”

We will always be an organization of members devoting our careers to empowering the African American officer and an unaltered commitment to being honest and value-guided when interacting with our community.

What is the relevance of history? Mr. Maulana Karenga best answered this question in his book entitled, The Introduction to Black Studies. Mr. Karenga stated that history is the substance and mirror of a people’s humanity in others’ eyes as well as their own eyes. It is then not only what they have done, but also a Reflection of who they are, what they can do, and equally important, what they can become as a result of the past, which reveals their possibilities. History then becomes the mirror thru which we look to discover and know ourselves. History is the source of models to emulate. “For to witness greatness and daring is to be aware of it’s possibility and desirability and be infused with it’s spirit.” (Maulana Karenga 1980).

The League of Martin is and always has been a voice that shapes positive change in our community. With Christ as our guide, we seek to follow through on the drums and philosophy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Because of this, the Milwaukee Police Department is certainly more reflective of the make up of the community in which it serves. Many are enjoying the fruits of the intense labor and sacrifice, which is a result of the successful litigation and the hard work of past, and present members.

This presentation is dedicated to the League Of Martin members who have lost their lives in the line of duty and to those members who are no longer with us. May God continue to bless the League of Martin and may God bless our community.

"The League of Martin is and always has been a voice that shapes positive change in our community."
